An Introduction
Tamil Eelam's National Heroes Days are to celebrated for the three days ending
November 27, which is the day the first LTTE fighter gave his life for the freedom
of the Tamil Eelam nation. Heroes Day celebrations first started in 1989 when it
was held on a single day, November 27.
From 1990-4 the programme was held
over a seven-day period, ending also on the 27th. Since 1995, it has been held for
3 days ending again on the 27th.
Maveerar days are held by people all over Tamil
Eelam in honour of the LTTE freedom fighters. During these celebrations people
light traditional oil lamps at home and in public places and ceremonies are held in
which Tamil Eelam's national flag is proudly raised. People also engage in prayers
for their nation, speeches are delivered by prominent people and the portraits of
freedom fighters who died are suitably garlanded.
